There is such a thing as a Free Lunch at the Care Café!
Scroll down for the upcoming dates…
The banner displayed on the railings of the Baptist Church on the High Street each first Saturday of the month announces that a FREE lunch is being served: cynical passers-by may mutter that there’s ‘no such thing as a free lunch’ but the simple truth is that we want to reach out in love to our community by inviting anyone and everyone to come inside our lovely building and spend a convivial hour or two in sharing a meal with friends and strangers alike. It is our pleasure to greet each person as our guest, and make them feel truly welcome. Those who have never been inside our Church before are generally surprised and amazed by the warmth and serenity of the place, and that is something we want to share too.
Our friendly team welcomes all ages : our regulars, who look forward to meeting up with each other each month, sit alongside hungry walkers, people just curious to see inside the church, and the occasional bemused Japanese tourist. We serve tasty home-made soup in the winter months, and a ploughman’s lunch in the summer – or you may just want a refreshing cup of tea or coffee to see you on your way.
As well as the lunch we run a swap shop for re-cycling children’s and adults good-quality clothing – anyone can bring along an item of clothing they no longer want (or fit in to!) and just swap it for something else. And even if you don’t have anything to exchange you are still welcome to take something away with you. In this difficult economic climate this is proving to be a very popular scheme. We are particularly in need of clothes suitable for teenage boys and girls at present so if you are able to help that would be great.
Donors to the North Cotswold Foodbank can drop off their contributions at the Care Café too – even if you don’t want to stay for lunch you are always welcome to come along to make your donations, all of which generous gifts are so gratefully received.
In truth the majority of people feel uncomfortable taking a free lunch, so we happily accept small donations from those who really want to give. That money is then used to further other caring projects of the Care Café in the community. We would love to see you any first Saturday!
